Nancy Lou Canyon
Ms. Canyon holds the MFA in Creative Writing from Pacific Lutheran University
and a certificate in fiction writing from University of Washington. She has attended workshops with Natalie Goldberg, Naomi Shihab Nai, Linda Beard, and mentored with Judith Kitchen and Ann Pancake. She teaches writing through Whatcom Community College's extension classes and Western Washington University's Academy of Life Long Learning. Nancy also gives private art and writing classes in Studio 21, located in the Morgan Block Building in Fairhaven, Washington.

Dreaming Beneath a Big Sky

Natasya and I smile on each other
even though the market was slow
today, for we are full of joy,
knowing a starry sky will feed
us soon. At noon a traveling man
tossed extra coins in our basket.
He said he was practicing generosity,
due to stars being brighter here,
I recognized the cloudy haze
in his eyes, a hungering for real sky.
And the way his fingers reached
for Natasya's hair--cheerless yearning.
We returned his coins and blessed
his being. Hearts are deep rivers
we must each honor. Wrapped
in woven cloth, we sweep a dirt bed
beneath the galaxies. At night,
day is a small thing.
